Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive forms of violence in many societies, with significant implications for the stability of communities. In Otukpo LGA, Benue State, GBV has been a persistent issue, affecting women, children, and marginalized groups. The manifestations of GBV in the community range from domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking to harmful traditional practices. Research indicates that the occurrence of GBV can undermine social cohesion, hinder economic development, and perpetuate cycles of violence (Suleiman & Jibril, 2024). The study will explore the relationship between GBV and community stability in Otukpo, focusing on the social, economic, and psychological impacts on the victims, families, and the broader community. Moreover, it will evaluate the responses to GBV by local authorities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders in addressing these challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Gender-based violence is a major social issue in Otukpo LGA, undermining community stability. Victims of GBV often face long-term psychological and physical trauma, while the community at large suffers from increased insecurity, social fragmentation, and disrupted economic activities. Despite various efforts by both the government and non-governmental organizations to address GBV, the issue persists, posing a significant challenge to peace and stability in the region. This study aims to assess the effects of GBV on community stability in Otukpo and explore strategies for mitigating these effects.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of gender-based violence on social stability in Otukpo LGA.

  • To explore the economic consequences of GBV for the community.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at addressing GBV in Otukpo.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does gender-based violence affect social stability in Otukpo LGA?

  • What are the economic implications of gender-based violence on the community?

  • How effective are the interventions implemented to address GBV in Otukpo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Gender-based violence does not significantly affect community stability in Otukpo LGA.

  • H₁: Gender-based violence significantly undermines community stability in Otukpo LGA.

  • H₂: The interventions for addressing GBV are ineffective in improving community stability in Otukpo.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of the social and economic impacts of gender-based violence on community stability in Otukpo LGA. The findings will inform policy makers, law enforcement agencies, and local organizations in developing more effective strategies to prevent and mitigate GBV, ultimately fostering greater community stability and resilience.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Otukpo LGA, Benue State, and will examine various forms of gender-based violence in the community. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing victims of GBV due to social stigma and the sensitive nature of the issue.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Any act of violence directed at an individual based on their gender, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful traditional practices.

  • Community Stability: The ability of a community to maintain social order, cohesion, and economic functionality.
