Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive forms of violence in many societies, with significant implications for the stability of communities. In Otukpo LGA, Benue State, GBV has been a persistent issue, affecting women, children, and marginalized groups. The manifestations of GBV in the community range from domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking to harmful traditional practices. Research indicates that the occurrence of GBV can undermine social cohesion, hinder economic development, and perpetuate cycles of violence (Suleiman & Jibril, 2024). The study will explore the relationship between GBV and community stability in Otukpo, focusing on the social, economic, and psychological impacts on the victims, families, and the broader community. Moreover, it will evaluate the responses to GBV by local authorities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders in addressing these challenges.

Despite various efforts by both the government and non-governmental organizations to address GBV, the issue persists, posing a significant challenge to peace and stability in the region. This study aims to assess the effects of GBV on community stability in Otukpo and explore strategies for mitigating these effects.

The findings will inform policy makers, law enforcement agencies, and local organizations in developing more effective strategies to prevent and mitigate GBV, ultimately fostering greater community stability and resilience.
